‘The Legend of Tarzan’ handler om den forældreløse dreng Mowgli, der bliver opdraget i junglen af ulvene Raksha, Akela og resten af deres flok.

Mowgli bliver dog nødt til at forlade sit hjem hos ulvene, da tigeren Shere Khan truer ham på livet.
Drengen må nu på en udfordrende rejse igennem junglen, hvor han bl.a. møder pytonslangen Kaa og orangutangen Kong Louie, der begge prøver at narre ham. Heldigvis får han hjælp undervejs af panteren Bagheera og bjørnen Baloo.

Filmen er en live action-version af Disneys klassiske tegnefilm fra 1967, der er inspireret af Rudyard Kiplings bog.

I hovedrollen ses den kun 10-årige debutant Neel Sethi, som udelukkende spiller over for animerede karakterer. Der er dog ikke sparet på stjernestemmerne til jungledyrene, hvor intet mindre end tre Oscar-vindere er på rollelisten, nemlig Christopher Walken, Ben Kingsley og Lupita Nyong’o.
‘The Legend of Tarzan’ er instrueret af manden bag bl.a. Elf og Iron Man, Jon Favreau, og er den første af to filmatiseringer af Kiplings forlæg, hvoraf den anden, Jungle Book: Origins, udkommer i 2018.
